Progress within the group

This week we have made a lot of progress within the group, the storyboard has been completed and with help from the teachers within the media department we have been able to take advice from the to add in shots and improve the storyboard that I had completed.

Luke is currently making the titles for the title sequence, playing around with fonts and sizes and the way they will enter and exit the screen, Luke will also be helping Aman with a precise shot list over the next few days. We are hoping for Luke to be free at the weekend to take part in filming.

Aman is currently working on the script, making it detailed, including what second each character will enter the shot and Aman will also be working with Luke over the next few days to create a precise and detailed shot list so the filming can be worked from the storyboard as well as the shot list. We are hoping Aman will be free at the weekend to take part in filming.

Priyanka and I are currently in the process of filming the first scene, getting various shots so we can decide on the angles we like and see if the character works and we have decided that we want the female to be a woman who goes against stereotypes, she appears to be under the control is a man who we do not see but we hear his voice shouting at her, when towards the end of out opening sequence we see that she is the character in control, it is mine and priyanka's job to ensure that we portray this with our filming.

Over the weekend, I will film the alley way scene, I have signed out a camera and a tripod to make sure that I am equipped to film at the weekend and get a range of shits so as a group we can decide what we like and what we would like to change.  I also need to take some location shots of the alley way I am filming in and the outside of my house as we are using that as a location in our opening scene. There are still a few more props that we need pictures of to post on our blogs which will be posted when completed.

From what I believe, Priyanka, Luke and Aman are going to a train station with a camera and a tripod to attempt to film the second scene which is the longest scene and we are hoping for it to last around 30 seconds. Getting this done, the alley way scene and hopefully the opening scene completed by Monday, next week will be a good week for us to analyse what we have done and what we have left to do. This scene involves both Aman and Luke as actors so it is important for Priyanka to get as many shots as she can so that we can all have a look and decide what pieces to discard and what pieces to use.

First day of filming

It was important for us to begin our filming, so we started with our first scene focused in a kitchen scene. This was crucial as it is the first scene on our storyboard and we felt it was very important to make a start so we can get an idea of how long each scene is going to take to film.

We had a few issues when filing this scene, the scene below we found was hard for the actress we had chosen not to giggle so we have decided we are going to re-film this scene completely tomorrow (friday 28th feb).

As you can see from the second clip, the glasses of poisoned drink which become very clearly one of the biggest parts of our opening, are out of focus which was a camera issue that my team had, again this is another reason why we believe it is absolutely crucial to re-film the entire scene now we know what has gone wrong and what we like about what we have done so far.

Overall, it has been a difficult week for the group, we have had some problems with the work load and some of the work that was delegated to certain people was not completed, this has made it hard for the group to not fall behind. However after discussing with the group and with our teacher, we have realised that although we may be behind, it is important for this issue not to get worse. This means putting in more and more effort into the work and spending more time discussing as a group and spending more time working in the media room and out filming.

First Storyboard

During the process of creating the storyboard i have experimented a lot and have changed my mind on many occasions. I have tried to create a very detailed storyboard and use a lot of different stages during the process, independently I have focussed on ensuring that the notes below each block entail a brief description of what is going on but it also includes hat camera angles are used and whether I want the scenery to be light or dark. I have also in some of the blocks included some post production ideas, such as fades and different editing techniques which are seen as good to use in the stage of the opening sequence.

I have tried to include a range of different camera angles, and different editing techniques. I have not yet decided on what types of sounds we will use as a group, this will be discussed as a group and added to our blogs at a later date.

There are 30 blocks to the storyboard and the photos of the storyboard will be uploaded tonight....

The final 13 blocks of the storyboard are made up of the title sequence explaining who plays each character and who the crew of the film are, as stated on the storyboard the following blocks will be held on the screen from 2-4 seconds , as they will flip on the screen as if it was the luck of a card trick.

Costumes / Characters & their basic background

The first character we see is a young woman (around the age of 30-35), she appears on the screen within the first 10 seconds of the opening sequence. We have looked at her character in great detail so that we are able to analyse the evaluation questions and we can look into the idea of stereotypes of women by analysing the representation of gender through our opening sequence. This character is the only female in our sequence. We have pictured her to look like the image below. We also hope to convince Miss Wilson at the school to play this character.

We are also introducing a character which plays the woman above's husband. Hoping to be played by Mr. Smith however we only hear this characters voice. At no point do we see or meet this character.

The second character that actually appears on the screen is being played by Aman in our group, this characters journey begins as we see him exit a train and continue walking. We imagine his costume to look along the lines of the image below.

As Aman's character exit the train, he continues walking and as see him glare at another character as he walks out of the train station, it is dark outside (POV shot), here we meet out 3rd character on screen , this character is a young white male appears to be around 20-30 years of age. When we meet this character, he is smoking outside of the train station and we see him glare over to Aman's character, a close up shot or a POV shot (still undecided)  here we are making the audience aware that there is already some sort of conflict between both of these characters. The character paying for the coffee - we imagine to be costumed like the image below.

We see a drunk man walking down an alley as our next character, he is seen to be obviously dangerous and just by this short scene we notice that this character is going to play a big part in the sequence. He has clearly been drinking a lot and appears to be an alcoholic, we want him wearing a white short with no jacket or coast but we want the shirt to be completely dirty as if h has been wearing it for days, holding a beer bottle, the audience can interpret that this character could be an alcoholic and it makes the scene seem tense. As you can see from the image below; this is what we want our character to look like.

Half-term Work

The work i have assigned to myself from the group over the half term is to take away the script which has hopefully been completed by other members of my group - if this has been completed then I will be able to finalise the shot list and the storyboard over the half term.

We have devised  a storyboard to look like the on above. Underneath the picture we will have the shot, brief overview of any dialogue used in this shot and a short list of the location and any props that will be used. Each part of the storyboard needs to be detailed. All the decisions need to have been made at the storyboard stage, all of the movements, most of the editing decisions as well, so that when it comes to filming and editing no time is wasted, especially as we are using actors outside of our group, we do not want to waste their time by making decisions and changing our mind about certain things; this is why it is important for all decisions to be made during the story-boarding stage.

The other groups that have been designated to the other members of my group include;
- taking pictures of ALL locations
- taking pictures of ALL props
- it is especially important for priyanka to film the alley way scene so when we come back from from half term we can see what the lighting is like and if we need to change any of the camera angles.
- ALL of the actors decided  (not including the character that turns up in the car as I have arranged this) and also not including the two teachers that I am arranging to play the first two character we meet/hear on screen
- script should be completed by now but if not finishing touches to the script should be finalised

Storyline

Below we have devised a basic storyline which i am currently developing into a storyboard as in individual whilst the other member of my group are working on other aspects of the opening sequence sch as the script, costumes, possible camera angles for the first 20/30 seconds of the clip.

We are aware as a group that this basic storyline is bound t change as the storyboard continues to develop and every time we meet as a group we tend to change our minds about certain ideas that we previously had. We believe that we changed things and made these decisions to benefit the group and create more tension and more of an eery meaning for the audience.

Where are we?

we are now at the final stages of our planning, we have a detailed idea of what we want to film and the majority of locations we will be filming at.
we are going to need 5 different locations to film 1 of the places is to film where the main events are going to take place. The next four locations will be used to show the entrance the four other characters in the opening sequence.

Things we need to finalise over during the next lesson:
- who we are using for our actors
- the final locations with images
- final list of props needed
-story boarding and script
- costumes

we also need the first shot of the man walking down the alley way so we can discuss which camera angles we want to use for him and discuss lighting, any other characters just in case we want to add some, whether we want to re-shoot or whether we like it as it is.

we also need to practice using the typewriter effect (we have done this on a basic level but not to the degree that we need to for the actually sequence) this will develop our understanding for the effect.

So far, we have notified that we are slightly behind in the planning stage; we have tried to catch up in the last few days by delegating the jobs more equally and trusting each other that all jobs will be done; however in the past this has occurred to be a problem.

Typewriter idea

As our main idea for the character names and actor names introductions is for them to appear on the screen during our opening sequence in a typewriter effect; we have decided to use this effect because we think it makes out opening sequence unique and different compared to everything else we have seen so far. It gives our opening a sense of intrigue and we feel it is a good effect to then develop the understanding of the genre.

Below we have located this video from youtube; it entails a detailed explanation of how we can place this effect on our timeline when in the editing stage of our opening sequence. This has given us a better understanding of the effect and an understanding of how to complete the effect when we need to.
